The First-Timer’s Range Checklist

Everything to bring, wear, know, and expect before your first trip to a shooting range — whether it’s a lesson with us or anywhere else. Print it, save it, send it to the friend who’s been putting it off.

What to bring

Government-issued photo ID (required at every range)Closed-toe shoes — no sandals, no exceptionsA ball cap (keeps ejected brass off your face and out of your collar)Water — ranges run warm and focus is thirsty workNothing else — at an L4A lesson, the firearm, ammo, targets, and eye/ear protection are all provided

What to wear

Crew-neck shirt — hot brass finds low necklines with uncanny precisionFitted sleeves and no dangling jewelry or loose scarvesHair tied back if it’s longComfortable pants — you’ll be standing the whole session

The four rules (know these cold)

1.Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded2.Never point the muzzle at anything you’re not willing to destroy3.Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target4.Know your target and what’s beyond it

What to expect

It’s loud — even through ear protection. That’s normal, and you stop noticing within minutesRecoil on a properly-fitted 9mm is a controlled push, not a violent kickNerves are normal and correct — the careful shooters are the safe onesNobody worth listening to judges a beginner — every shooter started at zero

Print this page or save it to your phone. Questions the checklist doesn’t answer are what the first 20 minutes of a lesson are for.
