The Complete Texas LTC Guide (2026)

Everything about the Texas License to Carry in one place: the seven-step process, real costs and timelines, the shooting test, eligibility rules, renewal, and where your license is valid. Thirteen instructor-written guides, all current for 2026.

How the Texas LTC works in 2026

Texas licenses carry through a two-part process: a DPS-certified classroom course (online since 2016) with a written exam, then a 50-round shooting proficiency demonstration with a qualified instructor. After that it's paperwork — the online DPS application, fingerprinting through IdentoGO, and a mailed license, typically 3–8 weeks end to end. Permitless carry didn't replace any of this: the license still buys 35+ state reciprocity, faster gun purchases, and the federal school-zone exemption. The guides below cover every step, fee, and rule in detail.
