If you've never fired a gun before — or never even held one — the hardest part of your first lesson is usually just booking it. Almost every new student tells us the same thing: they were nervous for days beforehand, and about ten minutes into the lesson they couldn't remember why. Here's exactly what happens at a first lesson with Liberty for All Training Co., so nothing is a mystery when you walk in.
“Me and my girlfriend went in with little to no previous experience and knowledge — we left feeling confident and safe.” — ★★★★★ Google review
You don't need to own a gun. You don't need to buy ammunition. You don't need any gear. Every L4A lesson includes loaner firearms, ammo, targets, eye and ear protection, and the range fee. You bring a government-issued photo ID, closed-toe shoes, and clothing that isn't loose or low-cut (hot brass ejects when you fire — you don't want it finding its way anywhere uncomfortable). A ball cap helps too.
Lessons happen at RifleGear in The Colony — a modern, clean, well-lit indoor range that's an easy drive whether you're coming from Plano, Frisco, or Dallas.
Your lesson starts away from the firing line. We cover how a handgun actually works, the universal safety rules, what the range commands mean, and what everything is going to sound and feel like. This is also where you get to ask every question you've been embarrassed to ask — there is genuinely no such thing as a dumb one here.
Next comes handling with an unloaded firearm: grip, stance, and sight picture, one skill at a time. Only when you're ready do we load and fire — starting slow, with your instructor right beside you for every shot. Most first-timers are hitting paper consistently within the first half hour, and the nerves are usually gone well before that.

Sessions run 60–120 minutes depending on the package. Before you leave, we'll talk through what you did well, what to practice, and — if you want them — sensible next steps, whether that's a follow-up session, guidance on a first purchase, or the Texas License to Carry course.
Being nervous doesn't disqualify you — it makes you exactly who this lesson was designed for. Our students include people who once flinched at the sound of a range, and they'll tell you the same thing: understanding replaces fear remarkably fast.
