The proficiency demonstration is the part of the Texas LTC that makes new shooters nervous — and it shouldn’t. It’s a safe-handling demonstration with a 70% passing bar that a prepared beginner clears comfortably. Here’s the entire course of fire, the scoring, and how to prepare.

Fifty rounds at a B-27 silhouette — a target roughly the size of a human torso. Hits in the center rings score 5 points, the next ring 4, anywhere else on the silhouette 3. Maximum 250; passing is 175 (70%). Practical translation: you can score threes on every single shot and still pass with room to spare. The test measures safe, controlled handling — not marksmanship. Retakes are permitted if needed.
One focused practice session before the test is enough for most beginners: grip, stance, sight picture, and trigger press at 3 and 7 yards — where 40 of your 50 scored rounds happen.
