Short answer: in Dallas-Fort Worth in 2026, a private shooting lesson typically runs somewhere between $60 and $150 per hour for the instruction itself. The catch is that the instruction is rarely the whole bill. By the time you add range fees, a rental gun, and ammunition, a "cheap" lesson often costs more than an expensive-looking one.
I teach for a living at RifleGear in The Colony, so here is the real math, including my own pricing, so you can compare apples to apples.
Most lesson quotes in DFW cover the instructor's time only. Here is what commonly gets added once you're at the range:
So a "$75 lesson" can quietly become a $130 to $160 afternoon by the time everything is rung up. There is nothing wrong with that pricing model, but you should know the full number before you book, not at the counter.
At Liberty for All Training, lessons are priced all-inclusive: $119 for a private one-on-one lesson and $169 for two people. The range fee, loaner pistols, ammunition, targets, and eye/ear protection are all included. The number on the website is the number you pay. You can see every session type and book here.
Private vs. group. One-on-one instruction costs more per person than a group class, and it should. You get every rep, every correction, and a lesson built around your pace instead of the group's. For a first lesson especially, private time is worth it.
What's included. This is the biggest hidden variable. Always ask whether the quote covers range time, a firearm, and ammo. Two lessons that look $40 apart are often nearly identical once you total everything.
Instructor credentials and focus. Certified instructors who work with beginners full time generally charge more than a buddy-of-a-buddy who "grew up shooting." The difference shows up in safety habits and how fast you actually improve.
Session length. Most DFW lessons run 60 to 90 minutes. Shorter than that and a true beginner barely gets past safety and grip before time is up.
Videos are great for concepts. They cannot watch your grip, catch the flinch you do not know you have, or stop a bad habit before it becomes permanent. Most students fix more in one supervised hour than in months of solo range trips, which, at $40 to $70 per casual range visit, add up faster than a lesson does.
If you are taking a lesson because you are thinking about buying your first gun, do the lesson first. A handgun is a $500 to $900 purchase you cannot return.
