Here's advice that saves new gun owners hundreds of dollars and years of regret: do not buy your first handgun before you've fired several different ones. The gun-store counter is one of the worst places in America to make a first purchase decision, and here's why.

Handguns are intensely personal. Grip angle, trigger reach, recoil character, slide stiffness, sights — what feels perfect in your friend's hands may fight you on every shot. The most commonly recommended “beginner guns” are recommended because they're popular, not because they fit you. Buy wrong and you've spent $400–$700 on something you'll dread practicing with — and a gun you don't practice with makes you less safe, not more.
The counter guy's job is to close the sale. Your job is to find the gun that fits your hands. Those are not the same project.
Every L4A lesson includes loaner handguns in the most common calibers and sizes — full-size, compact, and subcompact — at no extra cost. In a single session you can feel how differently a small carry gun behaves from a full-size pistol, how much caliber actually matters at the beginner stage (less than the internet says), and which controls your hands operate naturally. You leave with data instead of guesses.
Fit: Can you reach the trigger and controls without shifting your grip?
Purpose: Home defense, carry, or range practice? These pull toward different sizes.
Shootability: Which gun did you actually shoot best — not which one looked coolest? Your target doesn't lie.
Once you've trained, the purchase becomes simple: you already know your answer, and you can walk into any DFW gun counter immune to the upsell. Your instructor can also give you a straight, no-commission opinion on whatever you're considering — something the counter can't offer.
Book a lesson and test-drive before you spend a dime on hardware. Coming from up north? The range is only ten minutes from Frisco.
